I had the opportunity during my tenure at Future US to work with Shawn, who was one of the best business managers I have had the pleasure to be associated. Shawn is a sales driven organization’s ideal business manager because he displays strong analytical skills combined with a creativity that inspires those around him. On well over a dozen projects, Shawn’s approach toward both traditional and innovative research topics was focused on ways to expand the reach of his marketing efforts. Where many publishers simply “extract” information from their readers, paying little attention to the reader experience, Shawn recognized the value of research as dialogue between publishers and readers by adding look-and-feel elements including graphics, page designs and typography to help readers feel at home responding to surveys. The Audience Profile surveys we conducted for Future US were designed to gather information on readership, website visitorship and newsletter readership in a single pass, and his Non-Endemic research greatly broadened the potential advertising markets for his publications. Shawn was not afraid to approach strategic projects where they might have dramatic impact. Together we designed a three-stage Website Strategy study. It began with internal research to define questions that would most help his website editorial and advertising staff, continued with online qualitative research to define relative website strengths and opportunities from the audience perspective, and concluded with a comprehensive Website Audience Profile survey of both topical and non-endemic product interests to document the purchasing interests of his visitorship.
